“Philly, Is This What Heaven Is Like?” – The Lombardi Trophy

“Philly – Is this what Heaven is Like?”, exclaimed Howie Roseman, the Philadelphia Eagles Executive VP of Football Operations from the (“Rocky”) Steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art during the city’s Super Bowl parade celebration. The Lombardi Trophy stood a few feet to Roseman’s right on those infamous steps, as he and the whole team addressed the over three million Eagle fans that showed up this past Thursday on Feb. 8.

The fans came out to get a look at the cause of the heaven created in Philly — the Lombardi Trophy won in Super Bowl LII. The Lombardi trophy makes a city the “Center of the Football Universe,” as stated by Eagles defensive end, Chris Long.  But, the trophy is not only for the players and team. It is also for the many fans of the team, as Eagles safety Malcolm Jenkins relayed to the throng in his speech while holding the cherished symbol of success, “This is for you all – Philly!”

How It Began

The Lombardi Trophy’s backstory is a bit different than that of the athletic trophies we supply to New Jersey and beyond, here at Spike’s Trophies. It all started back in 1966 on a cocktail napkin, a humble beginning for the Vince Lombardi Super Bowl Trophy, one of the world’s most prestigious trophies. The jeweler innocently sketched it, unbeknownst to him the legacy it would leave behind.

The first Super Bowl, called the AFL/NFL World Championship Game, was played in January following the 1966 season. At that time, the game was a competition between the champions of the National Football League and the American Football League. Around the third championship game, it became known as the Super Bowl, a term coined by Lamar Hunt, owner of the Kansas City Chiefs and founder of the AFL.

After Super Bowl IV, the leagues merged and became the NFL, with teams divided into two conferences: the National Football Conference (NFC) and the American Football Conference (AFC). The two conference champions play in the Super Bowl.

Test of Time

Today’s Super Bowl trophy design is nearly identical to the original. “That’s one of the secrets of the trophy’s success and durability. It’s always been the same, which makes it instantly recognizable.”

It was named the Vince Lombardi Trophy in 1970, before Super Bowl V. Lombardi, who died of cancer on Sept. 3, 1970, was a well-respected coach who led the Green Bay Packers to victory in the first two Super Bowls.

The trophy is the perfect combination of modern and traditional. Made of sterling silver, it depicts a football sitting atop what resembles an elongated kicking tee–a plinth with three tapered, concave sides.

After the trophy is complete, the NFL symbol and the Super Bowl number are hand-engraved into a sheet stock of silver, which is applied to the base. The finished trophy stands 20-3/4 inches tall and weighs about seven pounds. Although it’s officially valued at $10,000 (1998), it’s a priceless symbol of hard-earned victory for the players and their fanbase.

Taking It Home

Until recently, there were 13 NFL teams that hadn’t won a Super Bowl: the Bengals, Bills, Browns, Cardinals, Chargers, Eagles, Falcons, Jaguars, Lions, Panthers, Texans, Titans and Vikings. The number 13 did NOT prove unlucky for the Eagles.

Immediately following a Super Bowl victory, the NFL Commissioner presents the trophy to the winning team. Sometimes during the celebratory festivities, the award is damaged. In this case, it’s returned to the manufacturer for repairs as well as the engraving of the team names and the final score. It then goes back to the team for permanent possession.

The teams are free to display the trophies where they want, so they end up in a variety of places, usually ending up in the lobby of the team’s facility.  The NFL Hall of Fame in Canton, OH has a copy of the trophy.

Sweet Victory

Along with the trophy, the players receive custom-designed rings and a cash award.  Most of the players on the winning team in Super Bowl 52 will make a $112,000 lump sum for their participation. Most of the losers will make $56,000, an even 50 percent of the winners’ shares.

After 52 years, the Vince Lombardi Trophy still stands as a sterling testimony to that accomplishment. “It’s a wonderful iconographic symbol of sports success in modern times.”  Each year, at the discretion of the owner of the winning franchise, a 3/4 size (16 inches tall, weighing 10 lbs.) actual replica Lombardi is available for distribution to the management, players and sponsors of the Super Bowl winners as a commemorative. Spike’s Trophies, Ltd. of Philadelphia, PA has been selected the authorized distributor of the Lombardi Trophy Replica this year for the Philadelphia Eagles.

Commemorate Nick Foles & the Philadelphia Eagles’ Championship Season with Limited Edition Plaques

Our last football entry reviewing the first half of the Philadelphia Eagles season ended with the following:

“If the Eagles continue to play this way, there will be many plaques and trophies in their future . . . Check back here (hopefully in February) to read the Philadelphia Eagles season review.

Well, we’re thrilled to say we told you so because it’s February and here are we celebrating the Philadelphia Eagles’ championship victory! That entry’s title began, “Carson Wentz & the…” whereas this one started off a bit differently. That part we certainly couldn’t have predicted.

Next Man Up

In Week 14, starting quarterback and MVP-favorite Carson Wentz went down with a torn ACL, putting him on the sidelines for the remainder of the season. The Eagles were forced to turn the offense over to Nick Foles. He, along with the rest of the team, stepped up, essentially going undefeated (discounting the last regular season game which was insignificant; Foles only played one series), culminating in their league championship victory.

After defeating the Atlanta Falcons in the first round of the playoffs, the Eagles beat the Minnesota Vikings in the conference championship to earn the George Halas trophy. Finally, the team brought the Lombardi Trophy to Philadelphia for the first time in its 51-year history! Foles took home MVP honors for the big game after becoming the first player to both throw and catch a touchdown pass in said game.

Commemorate Good Times

To honor this major accomplishment, we’ve devised two limited edition Spike’s Laminated E-A-G-L-E-S Wood Plaques that contain actual full-sized, permanently laminated pages from the Philadelphia Inquirer.

One commemorative plaque encases the front page of the publication’s sports section from Mon., Jan 22, showcasing the team’s victory over the Minnesota Vikings in the conference championship, earning them the right to fight for the league championship. The headline reads “Suped Up!” with a picture of Jeffrey Lurie, the team’s owner, hoisting the George Halas trophy and head coach Doug Pederson standing beside him.

The other plaque contains the front page of the Feb. 5 edition of the newspaper, highlighting the Eagle’s win in the big game with the headline reading “At Last!”, showing Nick Foles as he hoisted the coveted Lombardi Trophy while confetti rained down around him.

Whether your New Jersey football league needs trophies or you want to commemorate this momentous occasion with limited edition souvenirs, you know who to call! For more regarding Spike’s Trophies and our multitude of plaques and athletic trophies in New Jersey, please call 855-652-4030.

Philadelphia 76ers: Midseason Review

At Spike’s Trophies, the premier provider of custom awards throughout PA, we are proud of Philadelphia’s sports teams, including the 76ers

The Sixers have played almost half of their games and sit just outside of playoff positioning at ninth place in the Eastern Conference. They have an even .500 win percentage with 19 wins and 19 losses.

The Good

  • Joel Embiid, after a streak of injury setbacks, is off to a terrific start. He’s played in 29 of a possible 38 games, with per game averages of 23.8 points, 10.9 rebounds and two blocks. It’s scary to think he only has 60 NBA games to his name. It’s difficult not to get excited about his future as he continues to learn and gain experience. If he stays healthy, he’ll be a force to reckon with for years to come.
  • Rookie sensation Ben Simmons has been just that: sensational. Drafted first overall by the Sixers in the 2016 draft, he is definitely living up to the hype. Only missing one game so far, the prolific point guard’s per game averages are 16.9 points, 8.4 rebounds and 7.5 assists. Similar to Embiid, there is still so much room for growth as he plays more games and gains that critical experience. He already has the physical gifts and talent.
  • Second on the team in scoring is newly-signed sharpshooter J.J. Redick. He is shooting from the beyond the arc at a 40% clip while averaging just over 17 points per game. Besides the ever-significant shooting from long range, he also brings sorely needed veteran experience, having played in 88 playoff games as well. Fellow shooter Robert Covington is shooting at a career-high 39% from three-point land.

The Bad

  • With the first overall pick in last year’s draft, the 76ers traded up to select point guard Markelle Fultz. In his first regular season game, Fultz posted 10 points, three rebounds and one assist coming off the bench. However, a shoulder injury, deemed a scapular muscle imbalance, impaired Fultz’s shooting. After playing just four games, the 76ers elected to sit him until he recovers. He is now listed as day-to-day.
  • Although their youth is certainly a strength, the resulting inexperience is a weakness. Embiid and Simmons, their two best players, have played in a combined total of just 97 games. The Sixers organization and fan-base must continue to Trust the Process.

It’s unlikely they’ll win a championship this year, but it might be the first time they make the playoffs since 2012, and that’s a good start. The future is awfully bright for this talented, young squad.

3 Fantasy Football Trophies for Your League

With the National Football League’s (NFL) regular season winding down, fantasy football owners are getting ready for the playoffs. The next few weeks will be full of trash talking, lineup tinkering, matchup studying and free agent claiming. Usually, money is on the line, but depending on how much, sometimes the real reward is the trophy!

Here at Spike’s Trophies, famous across the globe for our vast collection of incredible trophies, plaques, sculptures and any other kind of award you can imagine, we have a selection of fantasy football awards specially designed for fantasy league winners, as well as the losers!

Take a look at some of our favorites:

Fantasy Football Armchair Quarterback

Made in heights of eight and eleven inches, the Fantasy Football Armchair Quarterback trophy is a popular choice.

trophy1

Its black base comes with a plate with an “FFL” logo made to look like the official NFL logo with space available for personalization. We’ve seen some strange fantasy league names!

Resting on the plate is the bronze-toned figure of the so-called armchair quarterback, representing the league champion who obviously did nothing but sit there and watch the real athletes play.

Fantasy Football Perpetual Trophy

Using the same figure of the armchair quarterback above, this wood-tone perpetual trophy consists of 12 plates so you can showcase the winning team year after year.

trophy2

This trophy is 23 inches (almost two feet!) in height. Above the individual plates, there is a larger plate to customize with your fantasy football league’s name or whatever else you’d like it to say.

Last Place Toilet Bowl Award

trophy3

The name says it all. For those of you (most of you) that like to poke fun at the team that ends the season in last place, this award is for your league!

Standing only 6.5 inches tall, this toilet bowl award is still able to be customized and includes the NFL-style FFL logo on the underside of the lid.

Although these are some our popular selections, any of our trophies and awards can be custom-made to serve as your fantasy football league’s championship reward if you want it to be!

To purchase one of our trophies and awards in PA in time for the end of the fantasy football season (normally Week 16 of the NFL’s regular season), head to our Center City showroom, call us at 855-652-4030 or place an order right here on our website.

Carson Wentz & the Philadelphia Eagles: 2017 Midseason Review

If the Super Bowl champions were crowned halfway through the season, it would be the Philadelphia Eagles holding trophies. Unfortunately for Philly sports fans, that is not the case. However, they have much to be excited about. Minus a few mishaps, the first half of the 2017 regular season has gone incredibly well. The Eagles sit atop not only their division but the entire National Football League with a blistering hot eight wins and only one loss.

The Good

In his sophomore season, quarterback Carson Wentz has progressed very nicely. Although his completion percentage is down by a mere 2%, he’s already thrown for 23 TDs, whereas last year he finished with 16. At this rate, he should have no problem more than doubling last year’s total by season’s end. Wentz is also on pace to throw fewer interceptions while throwing for more yards.

The receiving corps has been a vital factor in his success. Third-year receiver Nelson Agholor has shown significant improvement, already setting career highs for both TDs and yards in a season, and is on pace to easily surpass his reception total. Veteran wideout Alshon Jeffery, new to the Eagles this year, has also been solid. Agholor and Jeffery each have five TDs so far.

Zach Ertz, tight end for the Eagles since 2013, is on pace to set a career high in receiving yards while he has already set a new high in TDs.

The Bad

Every team suffers injuries. It’s the nature of the game. So far, they’ve lost veteran pass-catching running back Darren Sproles, veteran offensive tackle Jason Peters and star middle linebacker Jordan Hicks for the season due to injury. While they aren’t suiting up for games, they continue to impact the team behind the scenes – supporting, teaching and motivating their teammates as best as they can.

The Future

Although they lost Sproles due to injury and Ryan Mathews was cut back in August, they signed bruising running back LeGarrette Blount this past offseason who has contributed three TDs so far. And in even bigger news, the Eagles recently landed dynamic running back Jay Ajayi in a trade with the Miami Dolphins. He has the potential to make a major impact going forward, relegating Blount and fellow backs Corey Clement Wendell Smallwood to complementary roles where they are better suited.

If the Eagles continue to play this way, there will be many plaques and trophies in their future. They have a legitimate shot to win the Super Bowl and Wentz is an early favorite to win the league’s most valuable player award.

Check back here (hopefully in February) to read the Philadelphia Eagles season review.

Shedding Light on Famous Awards: The Country Music Association Awards

At Spike’s Trophies, we literally go gaga over glass awards and trophies, whether headed to mantles in New Jersey or Pennsylvania. As lovers of awards and award ceremonies, we are eagerly awaiting this year’s 51st Annual Country Music Association Awards. Airing the 8th of November, they’ll unite the country superstars Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood. As far as events go, the CMAs are some of the most spectacular. Since 1958, they’ve been shining a light on the best of country music.

The Superstars

Who hasn’t heard of Brad Paisley or Carrie Underwood, right? Brad returns to the CMAs for his 10th consecutive year on the stage as co-host of the ceremony. Beyond being a host of legend, Brad Paisley’s also an accomplished vocalist, guitarist, songwriter, filmmaker, and a comedian to boot!  As of today, Brad has earned himself 24 #1 tracks in the country music genre. In 2017 he released his latest and 11th studio album, LOVE AND WAR—one that will likely garner awards of its own.

The American Idol superstar herself, Carrie Underwood is also making her 10th appearance on the CMAs as co-host. Dating back to her performance of “Jesus, Take the Wheel” back in 2005, she’s been a sensation in everything she’s done. Alongside Brad Paisley, she’ll be one amazing host this year, without a doubt. Carrie herself has been awarded six CMAs, such as the CMA Horizon Award, the CMA Female Vocalist of the Year, and CMA’s Single of the Year.

The Gorgeous Trophies!

Honestly, who’d watch the CMAs if it weren’t for the rich walnut and sturdy marble trophies? We appreciate custom awards here in PA and the CMA Award trophy—conceived in ‘67—is no exception. A brass musical note adorns the front of the award, signifying style, strength, durability, and warmth. Because of the limited supply of walnut, its crafters transitioned to a crystal material in 1983. The trophy you see beaming on screen is assembled from a truly artisanal, hand-blown Florentine crystal. Spike’s Trophies can detect craftsmanship from a television or smartphone away.

As you’re celebrating the Country Music Association Awards this year, we invite you to take a gander at our selection of awards, trophies, and plaques. A little commemoration can make a superstar out of anyone!
