MLB Off-Season: Hot Stove… Big Moves… and What’s in Store for The Phillies

Here at Spike’s Trophies, we love cheering on our favorite teams just as much as we enjoy supplying customized awards and trophies for local organizations in the Philadelphia region. If you’re a baseball fan like many of us here are, you know that winter means it’s the off-season, but more importantly, it means that hot stove season is here! With several months still to go before teams head to spring training, major trades and big-name signings are set to occur. In fact, some deals have already gone down. Keep reading to find out what our hometown Phillies have been up to during this MLB off-season.

Ready To Spend

The top brass of the Phillies organization made it clear heading into the off-season that they were ready to spend money on players who could help the team become serious contenders. Owner John Middleton was recently quoted as saying, “We’re going into this expecting to spend money. And maybe even be a little bit stupid about it.” This should be good news to hear for Phillies fans, especially considering the talented player available in free agency.

Trading For Jean Segura

Before the Phillies dipped into the free agency pool, they made quite a splash in a trade with the Seattle Mariners. The Phils acquired shortstop Jean Segura, right-handed pitcher Juan Nicasio, and left-handed pitcher James Pazos from Seattle for first baseman Carlos Santana and shortstop J.P. Crawford.

Negotiating a deal like this proves the Phillies have their sights set on playing meaningful baseball in October. Segura is a good, young bat that can set the Phillies up for early inning runs. Plus, you can expect his power numbers to slightly improve playing in a hitter-friendly Citizens Bank Park.

Harper and Machado?

Arguably the two biggest names on the free agent market are Bryce Harper and Manny Machado. These two players on their own can be the best player on any given MLB team, so imagine if the Phillies were able to sign both of them to deals. While nothing has been signed yet, the rumors have been swirling, and many insiders tend to believe either Harper or Machado could come to Philly.
